Depression is most common among young adults and even in people younger than that. Depression disrupts the life of the person who has it at any point in their life, but it is more harmful to young people because it can force them to make such choices in their life that have life-long consequences. They may develop habits that hinders their potential and makes them secluded. As adolescents and teens are the ones most affected by depression, this is also the age that they develop habits that shape their lives. If that process gets disrupted or tainted by depression, it can cause a lot of problems in life. One more thing that makes depressive episodes in young people so dangerous is that they get exposed to getting another episode in the future. More than 13% of teens experience at least one depressive episode.
Things that can Cause Depression in Young People
There are different reasons that can become a catalyst for depression in young people. Naturally, it’s an age where individual body undergoes several changes, which may upset the balance in their life and leave them open for this disease to hit them. Here are few causes of depression in the youth:

- Hormonal Changes
- Negative Environment
These are a few common causes that can cause depression among adolescent teens or young adults. There are some other causes like; already suffering from some sort of illness like ADHD, anxiety, eating disorder, or being handicapped. These can also cause them to feel different from others, which results in low self-esteem. These can also make them a target for bullying and other forms of harassment. If a child has been abused in some way (which can be physical, sexual, or emotional) their mental health is already bruised. Since they are not allowed to deal with it properly, the feeling of helplessness and despair can reside inside them, which may never go away. Traumatic experiences like loss of a loved one or some accident that caused them a great deal of stress, which again was never treated, can take a form of depression later.
Hormonal changes may also cause depression
One of the biggest reasons for depression among teens is that they go through many changes – physical and hormonal. It is fairly common for women to get depressed during the menstrual period. The hormonal imbalance can cause this. Being brought up in a negative environment will also result in young people having depression. An environment where they are not helped or pushed around is not healthy for young minds, as feelings of vulnerability and hopelessness only make them susceptible to depression. Another reason for depression is genetics. Because people who have parents, grandparents, or other relatives that are depressed are three times more likely to suffer from depression themselves. Adjustment Disorder and Dysthymia are two of the common forms of depression found in the youth. They can last up to six months and sometimes even more than a year.
