Whenever people are in physical pain, whether it’s an injury or disease, they rush to the doctor to get medical attention, if that is not the case then they at least take some sort of medicine or some home remedy that helps them ease that pain or sickness. But when it comes to mental health and taking care of it, people blatantly ignore it. They even think it’s just their fault that if they just toughen up, they will eventually get through it. It could have small or serious signs of trouble they will still ignore it, until it gets to a point where it can’t be ignored. At times the person suffering from such mental illness has to do something big as a cry for help. Depression is an illness that eats an individual from inside. The first few notable changes are sadness, fatigue, loss of appetite, and sleeping too much or too little. These seem like some small out of the ordinary things that are happening to an individual at the moment and they will just pass over, however in case of depression these prolong for days and weeks. A person starts feeling sad where their mood is down all the time. And then emptiness crawls up, and this is when an individual becomes indifferent to everyday life. Things that pleased them don’t anymore. Then some physical symptoms show up like being tired all the time and not wanting to eat anymore. One starts having trouble recalling things from the past that were so present in your memory a while ago. People start trying to cope with these things with alcohol, drugs, and smoking. They even turn to self-harm as a way of making them feel something. Everything looks so bleak and hopeless that they start considering ending their life so they could just get away from all the misery, emptiness, pain, and sadness.
Depression can have minor symptoms as well as severe symptoms, depending on the condition of the person. Most of the time, someone is struggling with this illness, and people around them are not even aware of it. They put on a strong and happy face in front of them while fighting a battle inside themselves. But if people just start paying a little more attention to their surroundings, to their co-workers, family members, friends, colleagues, and loved ones, they will be able to notice that they may be going through a hard time.
