What Is Situational Depression?
Situational Depression is related to those depressive symptoms that are most relevant to the stress. However, it’s just an informal term to express the state of extreme stress, not described as a clinical disorder or depression. It’s also described in terms of adjustment disorder or reactive depression. The feelings of stress or depressive state triggered due to some major changes in life, any traumatic event, or sudden stresses triggers situational depression.

- Relocating or unstable living place,
- Educational issues, and
- Sudden breakdowns in health, job, or relationships
usually trigger such a depressive state. However, family history regarding depression would also be the reason for situational depression. Any existing mental disorders, experiencing a lot of stress, or getting through a lot of traumas at the same time would also lead to this depressive state.
As situational depression is linked with any traumatic situation or challenging life event, their symptoms might fade with time. Or as the person recovers from the depressive state and comes out of the trauma it would even completely disappear. On the other hand, thinking of the situation over and over could even lead to some serious conditions like self-harm and suicidal attempts. Some of the common symptoms discovered in most situational depressive people are:

How To Diagnose And Treat Situational Depression?
The symptoms of situational depression are often very prominent as they are followed by any life event. But often it’s confused with the usual stress due to the situation. Although it’s also a kind of stress often described as a more severe stressed state than a usual tension or stress due to some loss. It would also lead to difficulty in doing daily tasks which are often confused with laziness. However, the best way is to consult a doctor who would help you with your state and prevent the situation from worse results like suicidal attempts or self-harm.
Treatment methods might vary from person to person depending on the situation and the way that person is dealing and coping with the situation. However, it’s often recommended to stay active, eat properly, and exercise or practice yoga to prevent depressive episodes. Situational depression could be a natural response of sadness and stress to any trauma or stressful situation and the symptoms of sadness often remain for 4 to 6 months. Mild to moderate level of situational depression is easy to treat, as it needs less effort to manage the symptoms with self-care, but severe conditions are less likely to be treated without doctor’s consultation.
Situational depression might recover with time or if the situation progresses. But group support, counseling, medication, therapies, and mentoring could help in soon and rapid recovery and even could make a person come out stronger to tackle such situations.
