The brain is such a medium that controls the whole body of a human being. These are called neurotransmitters, which were either received or released by the nerve cells present in the brain and thus could also be called neurons. The space connecting these neurons is called the synapse. The neuron sending the neurotransmitter message to the next neuron via synapse and the receiver neuron receives that message through a receptor that is embedded on the surface. They send and fit the neurotransmitters by the sender to the exact receiver channel and then this receptor opened or activated like a key opening a door.

These messages play their role in regulating the mood as well. Although there are a lot of neurotransmitters researched and proved by a lot of researches that are directly or indirectly linked with mental disorders. But the ones that especially play their role or linked with depression are:

  • Dopamine

Dopamine is very essential to influence movement and motivation and a person’s perspective of recognizing reality. However, issues with dopamine might lead to some psychosis which can be in the form of some hallucinations or nightmares. It also has a link with the reward system of the brain.

  • Serotonin

It is considered as one of the most influenced neurotransmitters linked with depression as it is involved in regulating and normalizing appetite, sleep, mood, and certain body pains or aches. A lot of researches proved the fact that people with depression mostly have low serotonin levels. Low serotonin levels trigger severe depressive episodes and even precede higher risks for suicide.

  • Norepinephrine

It can tighten the blood vessels which raises the blood pressure of a person. Norepinephrine might also initiate anxiety and trigger some kinds of depression. However, it could be involved in motivation determining the rewards a person has.

  • Glutamate

It’s just a small excitatory molecule that plays an important role in mental conditions like Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder. Lithium Carbonate is usually used to stabilize glutamate levels and act as a mood stabilizer in depressive people.

  • Acetylcholine

It is linked with memory enhancements like recalling, understanding and learning something. All the activities of the brain linked with Acetylcholine are involved as well as influenced greatly by the depression.

  • GABA

GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid) as the name suggests is an amino acid that is considered more of an inhibitory neurotransmitter. It is also proved to act in alleviating anxiety.
